July 24, 2018 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release

NORWICH, Conn. - Delvin Perez produced a multi-hit game and Diego Cordero delivered a quality start on the mound, but the State College Spikes dropped the first game of a three-game set at Dodd Stadium to the Connecticut Tigers, 4-1, on Tuesday night.

Cordero (1-1) yielded three runs on six hits and a walk over three innings but took the loss. The left-hander produced his second consecutive start of six innings or more while allowing three earned runs or less, and tallied two strikeouts.

Perez collected a pair of singles to notch his seventh multi-hit game with the Spikes (14-22).

Connecticut (18-17) plated the first runs of the game when an errant pickoff throw by catcher Matt Duce allowed two runs to score in the opening frame.

Brandon Benson then doubled in Lars Nootbaar for a Spikes run in the seventh to cut the deficit in half. However, Darwin Alvarado's grounder down the third-base line with two runners on in the seventh hit the bag and ricocheted into left field for a two-run double to finalize the scoring.

Tigers starter Gio Arriera (2-2) earned the win after throwing six scoreless innings on the hill. Arriera gave up two hits, two walks and a hit batsman while striking out six batters during the night.

Yaya Chetouf (7) earned his New York-Penn League-leading seventh save in as many opportunities with a one-hit ninth inning, striking out one batter in the process.

Wednesday, the Spikes and Tigers meet at 11:05 a.m. for the middle game of their series at Dodd Stadium. State College is slated to send right-hander Michael Baird (0-1) to the mound, while Connecticut will go with right-hander Chance Kirby (1-1).
