CT Tigers Surpass .500 Mark in 4-1 Win over State College
July 24, 2018 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, Ct. - Gio Arriera pitched six scoreless innings and Darwin Alvarado tallied a two-run double as the Connecticut Tigers (18-17) posted a winning record for the first time since June 17 in a 4-1 victory over the State College Spikes (14-22) on Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium.
Connecticut took the lead for good on a throwing error by State College catcher Matt Duce in the bottom of the first. Following a single by Tigers leadoff hitter Wenceel Perez and a double from first baseman Jordan Verdon, Duce failed to pickoff Perez at third and both runners scored as the throw bounced down the left-field line.
Arriera (Win, 2-2), the 2017 Detroit Tigers fourth-round draft pick, matched his season-best with two base hits allowed and six strikeouts. The 20-year-old righty retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced and used a pair of double plays to send the Spikes away quietly through six frames.
State College scored once against Tigers reliever Mitchell Stalsberg (Hold, 2) on an RBI double by Brandon Benson in the seventh to cut Connecticut's lead to 2-1 but the Tigers hit back in the bottom of the inning. After a leadoff double by designated hitter Nick Ames and a laser from Jeremiah Burks that induced a fielding error at second base, Alvarado drove in the pair with a two-out, two-run double that clipped off third base and spilled into left field for a 4-1 Tigers advantage.
Drew Crosby (Hold, 4) allowed two hits in a scoreless eighth inning and closer Yaya Chentouf (Save, 7) remained perfect in save opportunities as a pro with one hit and one strikeout in the ninth. The Tigers played their quickest nine-inning game of the season in two hours and 17 minutes to reach their first winning record since a 2-1 mark on June 17 after the opening homestand against the Lowell Spinners.
In his second game with the Connecticut Tigers, Verdon led his club with two doubles and a run scored. Ames also recorded two base hits with a single, a double, and a run scored. 2018 Detroit Tigers seventh-round draft pick and center fielder Eric De La Rosa extended his team-best, on-base streak to 13 games since joining the Tigers on July 5 with a single in the first inning against the Spikes.
On Wednesday, the Tigers host the Spikes again on Camp Day with an early start time of 11:05 a.m. Connecticut right-handed pitcher Chance Kirby (1-1, 4.08) draws the start against State College righty Michael Baird (0-1, 1.86). Coverage on the Norwich Courtyard by Marriott Connecticut Tigers Radio Network begins with Kevin Gehl and Elijah Gonzalez at 10:50 a.m. on WICH 1310 AM across Connecticut and online at CTTigers.com via TuneIn Radio.
