Perez and Sibrian Homer in 6-5 Loss in Augusta

AUGUSTA, S.C. - Hedbert Perez and Jose Sibrian both hit solo home runs and Aidan Maldonado struck out three over three scoreless innings, but Augusta's Ethan Workinger and Jeremy Celedino led the way again for the GreenJackets as they both homered for the second straight game in a 6-5 Augusta victory over the Carolina Mudcats on Wednesday afternoon at SRP Park in Augusta, S.C. The loss was Carolina's season-worst eighth straight.
Logan Henderson started and allowed Workinger's three-run home run in the first as well as Workinger's two-run double in the second. The home run was Workinger's third of the series.
Henderson (L, 0-1) returned for the third and worked a scoreless inning, but pitched through just three innings with five runs allowed on five hits while taking the loss.
The Mudcats (30-27) were down 5-0 after three, but cut into the deficit with two runs in the fourth off Augusta (29-30) starter Spencer Schwellenbach. Both Jadher Areinamo and Luke Adams singled and scored in the fourth with Areinamo scoring on a force out and Adams scoring from third on a double steal.
Those two fourth inning runs were all Schwellenbach (W, 3-2) allowed as he earned the victory with six quality innings pitched, three hits, two runs and six strikeouts.
Carolina was down 5-2 through the fourth before Celedino connected on a solo home run in the fifth off reliever Chase Costello. That home run was his third of the series and proved to be eventual game-winner as the Mudcats went on to score three late runs over the final three innings to get within one of the lead.
Carolina scored once in the seventh on an error, once in the eighth on Perez's home run and once more in the ninth on Sibrian's solo blast. Relievers Nolan Martinez and Samuel Strickland allowed the Perez and Sibrian big flies respectively across the eighth and ninth.
Martinez worked the seventh and eighth and allowed two runs on three hits. He also walked three and struck out three. Strickland (S, 2) pitched the ninth and earned the save despite allowing a run on one hit (Sibrian's home run).
Maldonado pitched the final three innings for the Mudcats and allowed just one hit while holding the GreenJackets scoreless. Maldonado also pitched around three walks and struck out three.
