Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
The Lynchburg Hillcats picked up back-to-back victories over the Charleston RiverDogs thanks to a walk-off single from Jose Devers to put them in front 7-6 on Wednesday night.
Lynchburg was playing catch-up for most of the game before finally taking the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Charleston would tie things back up in the ninth before the Hillcats won it in the bottom of the frame.
The RiverDogs jumped out to the early lead thanks to back-to-back doubles in the first inning by Xavier Isaac and Dominic Keegan. Isaac would score on Keegan's double before he would score on a throwing error later in the inning.
The Hillcats would patiently wait for their moment which came in the fourth inning when Carson Tucker doubled down the right field line to score Angel Genao. That double was one of four hits for Tucker in the ballgame. Later in the inning, Jose Devers would pick up an RBI on a ground out that would plate Maick Collado.
Charleston would retake the lead in the sixth thanks to Ryan Spikes, whose double would put them back up by one. In the top of the eighth, Charleston would tack on another run by Odalys Peguero after a fielding error on Collado. Colmenarez would score to put them up by two.
In the bottom of the eighth, Lynchburg would open the inning with four straight hits capped off by a bases clearing stand-up triple for Zac Fascia. For Fascia, that was his second triple of the season. He would score on a sacrifice fly from Guy Lipscomb to put the Hillcats up 6-4 heading to the ninth.
Two runs were not enough for the Hillcats as the RiverDogs would strike twice to tie the ballgame. Dominic Keegan would drive home Chandler Simpson with a sacrifice fly to make it a one run game. Down to their final strike, Spikes would deliver again, this time with an RBI single past the outstretched glove of Carson Tucker at second to tie the game.
However, Lynchburg would not be deterred as they would load up the bases with no one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. After a strikeout, Jose Devers would deliver his second walk-off single of the season as he chopped one up the middle to score Angel Genao, winning the game.
Lynchburg and Charleston will face off for game three on Thursday night at 6:30 at Bank of the James Stadium.
