Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons (17-24) fell in a pitcher's duel to the Peoria Chiefs (19-23) for the second straight night, falling by a 1-0 final score in front of a packed house of 8,673 at Fifth Third Field on Saturday night. With the loss, the Dragons fall to 5-8 in one run ballgames and lost their second game in as many nights to Peoria.

Dragons starter Ramon Ramirez (ND) pitched well early with help from his defense, who turned double plays in each of the first two innings. In the Peoria third, Ramirez allowed three hits but was able to leave the bases loaded, keeping the game scoreless. Chiefs starting pitcher Matt Weber (W, 2-5) was also successful in the early innings, facing just one batter over the minimum while allowing just two base runners.

Ramirez was lifted after an efficient 4.0 innings of work; the Dragons starter shut out the Chiefs during his appearance, surrendering only five hits while striking out three. In the top of the fifth, Peoria was able to break the scoreless tie off new Dragons pitcher Alexander Farfan (L, 1-2). The Dayton right-hander walked the leadoff batter Drew Larsen, who was then driven in by an RBI triple from Chiefs second baseman Eric Patterson - making it 1-0 Peoria.

Weber, meanwhile, continued his strong outing through the middle innings, allowing just three base runners to get into scoring position during his 7.0 inning stint. He finished with six strikeouts and just one walk while scattering five Dragons hits. He picked up his second win of 2005 throwing 92 pitches, 65 of them for strikes.

Farfan was relieved in the seventh inning by Blake Hendley (ND) after just 2.0 innings of work. Despite the one run given up by Farfan, he and Hendley kept the Miami Valley's team within one run - and it nearly paid off. However, the pitching tandem of Tim Layden (ND) and Jon Hunton (S, 3) proved to be too much in the end. In the Dragons ninth, Ben Himes walked to lead-off the inning, stole second, and took third on a long fly-out to center; however, Himes would be left stranded as Habelito Hernandez grounded out to shortstop, sealing the 1-0 Chiefs victory.

The Dragons close out their current eight-game home stand in a Sunday matinee against the Peoria Chiefs with a 2:00 PM first pitch. 1410 ESPN Radio carries the game live with the pre game show beginning at 1:30 PM. RHP Zac Stott (1-1, 2.91 ERA) will get the ball for the Dragons while RHP Sean Gallagher (4-1, 0.37 ERA) will throw for the Chiefs in the series finale.
