Dayton, OH– Matt Weber tossed seven shutout innings and Eric Patterson tripled home a run in the 5th as the Peoria Chiefs defeated the Dayton Dragons 1-0 Saturday night in front of 8,673 at Fifth Third Field. With the win, their second straight, the Chiefs improve to 19-23 on the season and 13-10 on the road.

For the second straight night the Chiefs scored first to break up a pitchers duel. Drew Larsen drew a walk from Dragons reliever Alexander Farfan to start the 5th inning. With one out Larsen advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw from Dayton catcher Craig Tatum. Eric Patterson capitalized with a triple off the centerfield wall to score Larsen and give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

Jon Hunton walked the leadoff man Ben Himes in the 9th. Himes was sacrificed into scoring position and advanced to third on a long flyout. Hunton recovered to get Habelito Hernandez to groundout to shortstop to end the game and leave the tying run on third base. With the inning of work Hunton picked up his third save of the season.

Peoria had a chance to take the lead in the 3rd against Dayton starter Ramon Ramirez but left the bases loaded. Alan Rick led off with a single and went to second on a basehit by Larsen. After a flyout, Patterson singled to left to load the bases with one out. But Aaron Sisk popped out to the catcher in foul territory and Ryan Harvey struck out swinging to end the inning.

Chiefs starter Matt Weber (2-5) was impressive again tossing seven shutout innings and leaving with a 1-0 lead. The right-hander allowed five hits and one walk while striking out six. Left-handed reliever Tim Layden tossed a perfect 9th inning with a strikeout. Pepsi Player of the Game.

Matt Weber (SP) – Weber, coming off a complete game loss against Burlington, tossed seven shutout innings Saturday night. He threw 92 pitches, 65 for strikes while lowering his ERA from 3.19 to 2.78. Weber is now 2nd in the MWL in innings pitched on the season and 2nd on the Chiefs in strikeouts.
