Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

Lowell, MA (Sunday, October 17, 2004) –Justin Taylor scored two goals and Eric Staal and Colin Forbes added a goal and an assist each as the Lowell Lock Monsters defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 5-3, before a crowd of 2,508 at Tsongas Arena.

With the win, the Lock Monsters improved to 2-0, while the Penguins fell to 0-3 on the season. With the loss, the Penguins are off to their worst start since 1999 when they opened the season with five straight losses.

The Penguins took a 1-0 lead late in the first period on a nice individual effort by Ramzi Abid. He stole the puck from Ryan Bayda just inside the blue and line and skated in and snapped a wrist shot past goaltender Brent Krahn for his third goal of the season at 14:42.

But early in the second period, Lowell came back and tied the game on Mike Zigomanis' first goal of the season at 7:42. Zigomanis took a cross-ice pass from Richie Regehr and beat Penguin goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury with a shot from the high slot.

The Penguins regained the lead later in the period on Tomas Surovy's first goal of the season at 14:59. Krahan made a pad save on Shane Endicott's shot from the left face off dot, but Surovy was right there in the crease to put back the rebound for the goal. However, the lead didn't last long as Taylor scored on a penalty shot 1:25 later to tie the game at 2-2.

In the third period, Lowell took a commanding 5-2 lead with three goals in two minutes, including two in a span of 18 seconds. Eric Staal scored his second goal of the game at 6:52 and Taylor followed up with his second goal of the game 18 seconds to give the Lock Monsters a 4-2 lead. Colin Forbes scored his first goal of the season at 8:52 to give Lowell a 5-2 lead. Forbes took a pass from Staal and beat Fleury low to the glove side for the goal.

A few minutes later, the Penguins cut the lead to 5-3 on Shane Endicott's goal at 10:09, but could not get any closer. Endicott and Surovy both recorded a goal and an assist in the loss.

Fleury, who was taken out after two periods in last night's 7-3 loss at Manchester, stopped 30 of 35 shots, while Brent Krahn made 32 saves in his first start of the season.

The Penguins continue their four-game road trip on Wednesday when they visit the Norfolk Admirals in the first of three consecutive games against the Admirals. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Norfolk Scope.
