Springfield Falcons News Release
Providence, RI â The Springfield Falcons were not able to beat Providence Bruins goaltender Hannu Toivonen on any of the club's 24 shots in a 4-0 loss before 3,976 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Sunday. Brian Eklund made 31 saves while making his first start of the season in the Springfield net. P-Bruins center Brad Boyes assisted on three power-play goals to help his team avenge a 4-3 season opening loss to the Falcons on Friday.
Providence scored twice in the opening period to gain early momentum. Left wing Martin Samuelsson lifted a shot over the shoulder of Eklund 2:16 in the game. With just two seconds left in the period, Andy Hilbert knocked in a loose puck from the edge of crease during a P-Bruins power play to make the score 2-0.
Neither team found the net in the second period, however, Providence added two power-play goals in the final frame. Defenseman Milan Jurcina tallied at the 6:59 mark for his first goal of the season. Right wing Yorick Treille scored 6:07 later to capitalize on a Bruins' man advantage created by a tripping penalty issued to rookie Nick Tarnasky. The goal marked Treille's third of the young season. The 24-year-old scored twice in a 5-4 shootout loss for Providence in Lowell on Saturday night.
The shutout by Toivonen came two days after the Falcons had beaten the netminder for four goals on 27 shots. Toivonen, a 2002 first-round draft selection by Boston, registered two shutouts for Providence as a rookie last season.
The P-Bruins converted three of six power-play opportunities in the game. Eight of the 14 goals surrendered by the Falcons this season have come during power plays. Springfield did not score in eight chances with the man advantage on Sunday.
Providence finished with a 35-24 shot advantage in the contest. Defenseman Marc Busenburg led the Falcons with five shots on goal.
The Falcons will travel to Portland to face the Pirates on Friday in the club's fourth straight road game. The Falcons will host the Worcester IceCats in their 2004-05 home opener at the Springfield Civic Center this Saturday.
