Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Devils goaltender Scott Clemmensen made 22 saves in recording his second shutout of the season as Albany defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 4-0, on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
The first period remained a scoreless tie until the final five minutes of the frame as Albany struck twice in quick succession. The Devils would see their first goal come from the hard work of Darcy Zajac, who won a battle behind the Penguins net and sent a pass in front. Stefan Matteau hopped up to the bouncing puck and banged it home at the 15:20 mark.
The Devils then went ahead, 2-0, just 2:28 later when Joe Whitney beat a screened Matt Murray to the blocker side with a wrist shot from the far circle.
Albany maintained its lead through the second period and would double its edge early in the third on another pair of back-to-back goals.
Paul Thompson pushed a face-off win back to the blueline for Brandon Burlon, who sent a long shot in from the point that ricocheted off a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton player and inside the left post to make the score, 3-0, for the Devils at 3:29 of the third.
Just over two minutes later, another bounce went against the Penguins as Murray's attempt to clear a loose puck out from in front of his crease caromed off a body across the goal line. Zajac was given credit for the goal that put Albany ahead, 4-0.
Murray suffered just his second regulation loss in his last 17 starts (14-2-1), stopping 22-of-26 shots.
With the loss by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Hershey's win over the Binghamton Senators, the Bears claimed the East Division title.
The Penguins take the ice for their final home game of the regular season as they face the Norfolk Admirals on Saturday, Apr. 18 at 7:05 p.m. for Fan Appreciation Night, sponsored by McDonald's.
Individual tickets for all Penguins home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena Box Office, online at TicketMaster.com, or by calling 800-745-3000.
