Joel Armia and Chase Balisy scored in the shootout and Eric Comrie stopped both shooters he faced as the St. John's IceCaps threw a wrench into the Springfield Falcons' playoff plans with a 4-3 victory at Mile One Centre on Friday night.

Jason Jaffray, Balisy and Blair Riley scored for the IceCaps, while Michael Chaput, Marko Dano and Luke Adam replied for Springfield. With the win, the IceCaps have now won back-to-back games for the first time since March 6.

After a scoreless opening frame, the IceCaps struck first on the power play early in the second period.

Julien Brouillette teed up a point shot that missed the net but the puck bounced off the back boards where Jaffray was able to catch a piece and send it behind Falcons starter Scott Monroe at 6:10.

Chaput put the visitors on the board less than a minute later as he capitalized on a great passing play from Brian Gibbons and Josh Anderson at 6:56.

The IceCaps held a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame thanks to Balisy's 20th goal of the season. With Ryan Parent in the box for interference, Balisy finished off a beautiful play on a pass from Joel Armia at 7:58.

Riley put the IceCaps up 3-1 in the first half of the third period as he finished off a give-and-go play with Austen Brassard at 8:32. The duo broke in on a two-on-one and made several passes before a last-second dish to Riley opened up the goaltender and allowed Riley to slide home his eighth of the season.

The latter half of the final frame, however, belonged to the Falcons. Dano brought Springfield to within one at 10:12 after he converted a rebound past Comrie before St. John's native Adam tied the game with 1:29 left in the contest, as he redirected a Sonny Milano shot to force overtime.

The IceCaps had a great chance to end the game in overtime as Will O'Neill was hauled down by Adam, resulting in a 4-on-3 power play for the final 1:47, but they were unable to seal the victory until the shootout.
