April 17, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release
Manchester, N.H. - The Portland Pirates (37-28-7-2) fell to the Manchester Monarchs (49-16-6-3) by a score of 3-2 in the twelfth and final meeting between the two teams in the regular season. The loss also moved the Pirates outside of the top eight in the Eastern Conference standings, putting them on the outside looking in for playoff contention with only two games left to go in the regular season.
Henrik Samuelsson converted a Pirates power play into a goal at 11:17 in the first period, with help from Lucas Lessio and Alex Bolduc. It wasn't long before the Monarchs tied it up at one with an unassisted goal from Nic Dowd at 14:43. Manchester took the lead on a goal from Michael Mersch at 19:01, assisted by Jordan Weal and Nick Ebert.
Justin Auger opened up the Monarchs lead, making it 3-1 at 5:37 in the second, assisted by Weal and Colin Miller. Samuelsson netted his second power play goal of the night at 19:30 in the second, assisted by teammates Bolduc and Brandon Gormley.
Tensions were running high throughout the game because of the playoff stakes for the Pirates. The first period saw a couple of fights, the first between Dowd and Portland's Brendan Shinnimin, and the second between Portland's Eric Selleck and former teammate Paul Bissonnette.
Mike McKenna (26-18-6) was in net for Portland, saving 20 of 23 shots faced. Patrik Bartosak (13-7-4) stood between the pipes for the Monarchs, blocking 42 of 44 shots from the Pirates.
The Pirates will host the Providence Bruins tomorrow night, April 18, at 7 p.m. The game will be Fan Appreciation Night. It is the last regular-season home game of the year and the Pirates will announce the winners of this year's team awards as well as present the "shirt off their backs" jerseys. Tickets for the game are buy-one-get-one-half-off when you call 207-PIRATES before 5 p.m. on the day of the game. From there, the Pirates travel to Worcester on Sunday for their last regular season game of the 2014-2015 season. Puck drop against the Sharks is scheduled for 3 p.m.
