Penguins Recall Kostopoulos

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled right wing Tom Kostopoulos from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, it was announced today by General Manager Craig Patrick.

Kostopoulos, 22, led Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in scoring with 53 points (27+26) in 70 games during the 2001-02 season. He led the team in goals, power play goals (10), tied for first in game-winning goals (3), ranked second in assists, second in short-handed goals (2), third in shots (217) and eighth in penalty minutes (112).

The 6'0", 200-pound native of Mississauga, Ontario has played in seven games this season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, recording two points (1+1). He scored his first career goal in his first NHL game December 29 vs. Ottawa. He was reassigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Jan. 14 after being recalled on Dec. 28.

In 226 career games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Kostopoulos has recorded 163 points (69+94) and 353 penalty minutes. He is the team's all-time leader in games played, points, goals, assists and is tied for first in shots (608).

Kostopoulos was selected by Pittsburgh in the seventh round (204th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

He is expected to be in the lineup tonight when the Penguins visit the New York Rangers at 7:00 p.m. at Madison Square Garden. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
