MacLean Named AHL Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that St. John's Maple Leafs center Donald MacLean has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 7, 2002. In four games last week, MacLean recorded three goals and four assists for seven points, capturing the John B. Sollenberger Trophy as the league's scoring champion.

MacLean entered the week in a three-way tie for the AHL's scoring lead. He recorded a goal and two assists in the Maple Leafs' 5-0 win over Saint John on Tuesday, and added an assist each in Wednesday's 4-2 victory over the Flames and Friday's 5-2 win over Quebec. MacLean then capped his 2001-02 season with two goals in a 4-4 tie with the Citadelles on Saturday, securing the title with 87 points on the year. In recognition of his achievement, MacLean will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to a local youth hockey organization in MacLean's name.

A second-round choice of Los Angeles in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, MacLean finished with 33 goals and 54 assists this season. He has skated in 277 career matches in the AHL, recording 98 goals and 136 assists for 234 points. The native of Sydney, N.S., has appeared in 25 career NHL games with Los Angeles and Toronto, notching five goals and three assists.

Labbe and Worcester forward Jame Pollock.
