Penguins pummel Bears 7-1 in preseason action Friday

Connor James scored two goals to lead the way for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton as the Penguins won 7-1 Friday night at Wachovia Arena.
The two teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first period, with the BEARS firing eight shots on Penguin goaltender Andrew Penner. HERSHEY backstop Frederic Cassivi stopped all five shots he faced against very little pressure from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The BEARS had six power play opportunities in the first 20 minutes, but failed to convert. The Penguins had two chances on the man advantage and were unsuccessful on both attempts.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would begin to get the offense clicking in the second period, and they would do so by virtue of the power play. Erik Christensen would start the power play barrage with his first goal of the preseason at 8:06 of the second with Chris Bourque in the penalty box. Shortly thereafter, BEARS enforcer Pete Vandermeer received a five minute boarding penalty for hitting Penguin forward Tim Wallace into the glass. Vandermeer would fight Wilkes-Barre's Matt Carkner to earn another five minutes and a game misconduct, and then fought Penguin forward Dennis Bonvie on his way to the visiting tunnel after being tossed out of the game. In all, Vandermeer picked up 35 minutes in penalties, and he and Bonvie were tossed out of the contest. On the ensuing power play, the Pens would score two more goals to run the lead to 3-0. Defenseman Micki Dupont scored on a right point shot at 8:55 of the second, followed closely by a Tim Sestito power play marker at 10:55. The Pens would outshoot the BEARS 12-8 in the period, and take a 3-0 lead to the dressing room after 40 minutes. James would lead a four-goal outburst in the third to lead the Pens to victory.
HERSHEY was without the services of defenseman Lawrence Nycholat, left wing Louis Robitaille, defenseman Jeff Schultz, left wing Tomas Fleischmann, and defenseman Timo Helbling among others. Goaltender Daren Machesney dressed as the backup, but did not see game action.
The BEARS play next on Sunday night when the Penguins visit GIANT Center at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the GIANT Center box office, or by calling (717) 508-BEAR. Tickets from Saturday's canceled game with the Norfolk Admirals will be honored at Sunday's game. HERSHEY'S regular season opener will be Saturday, October 7 at Wilkes-Barre at 7:05 p.m., which will kick off a season opening four-game road trip for Bruce Boudreau's team. The BEARS will raise the club's ninth Calder Cup banner on Saturday, October 21 against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at GIANT Center prior to the scheduled 7:00 p.m. face-off.
