Penguins Fall Short against Senators
January 9, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Despite outshooting the Binghamton Senators by a 32-16 margin, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins fell to the Binghamton Senators, 3-1, at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza..
Binghamton struck first in the contest as defenseman Andre Benoit broke out of his zone to lead a 3-on-1 rush. Benoit fed the puck to the near circle for Jakob Silfverberg, who found Stephane Da Costa with a backdoor pass that was tapped home to put the Senators ahead, 1-0, at 6:27.
With power play time carrying over into the third period, the Senators extended their lead to two a minute in when Eric Gryba's long wrist shot from the point sneaked under the blocker of screened Penguins goalie Jeff Zatkoff
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton then cut the lead in half at 4:45 on Paul Thompson's 10th goal of the season. Dylan Reese sent a pass to Eric Tangradi in the slot, where he walked in and unleashed a snapshot on Robin Lehner. The Senators netminder couldn't control the rebound and Thompson backhanded the loose puck into the net.
The Penguins continued to press for the equalizer over the remainder of the regulation, but Mike Hoffman iced the game for Binghamton, picking off a pass at center ice and finding the empty net with 1:07 to go.
Zatkoff turned aside 13-of-15 shots for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, while Lehner raised his record against the Penguins this season to 4-0-1 with 31 saves in the game.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins host the Hershey Bears on Friday, Jan. 11 at 7:05PM. Individual seats for all Penguins' home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena box office, online at www.ticketmaster.com, and by calling 800-745-3000.
