Jon Cooper, Jeff Daniels Added to AHL All-Star Classic Coaching Staffs

January 9, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews announced today the selection of Jon Cooper of the Syracuse Crunch and Jeff Daniels of the Charlotte Checkers to join the coaching staffs for the 2013 Dunkin' Donuts AHL All-Star Classic in Providence, R.I., on January 27-28.

Cooper will join Binghamton Senators head coach Luke Richardson in the Eastern Conference, while Daniels will work with Toronto Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins on the Western Conference bench. Richardson and Eakins earned coaching berths when their teams owned the best record in their respective conference at the pre-determined deadline, the end of play on Dec. 31.

Cooper, 45, is in his third season as a head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning's top development team in the AHL. The native of Prince George, B.C., has guided the Syracuse Crunch to a league-leading 49 points (22-7-2-3) this season, a year after winning the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as the AHL's outstanding coach when he led the Norfolk Admirals to a 55-18-1-2 mark - including a professional hockey record 28-game winning streak - and eventually the Calder Cup championship. Cooper, 116-63-11 (.639) for his AHL career, will be making his first AHL All-Star appearance.

Daniels, 44, has been with the Carolina Hurricanes organization since beginning his second stint there as a player in 1999, and is now in his fifth season as head coach and general manager of their AHL affiliate, including his third in Charlotte. Daniels, 178-149-25 (.541) as an AHL head coach, led the Checkers to an appearance in the conference finals in 2011 and currently has them atop the South Division with a record of 20-11-2-3. The native of Oshawa, Ont., who skated in 181 games in the AHL during his 15-year playing career, will be appearing in his first AHL All-Star Classic.
