Penguins Edged By Bears in Shootout

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were able to earn a point thanks to a late goal in regulation by Nick Petersen, but it was the Hershey Bears prevailing in the shootout, 3-2, on Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Plaza Arena. With the defeat, the Penguins' winless streak reached five games (0-2-0-3).
The two teams entered the third period tied, 1-1, but it was Hershey taking its second lead of the game on a 4-on-3 advantage. Ryan Potulny recorded his second marker of the night with 4:40 left in regulation when he sent a snapshot around a screen and past goalie Brad Thiessen.
Petersen pulled the Penguins even with 1:16 left on the clock, gathering a failed clearing attempt by the Bears and tucking a backhander around the skate of Braden Holtby.
After the overtime period failed to produce a final result, Potulny and Keith Aucoin found the back of the net in the shootout, while Holtby denied 4-of-5 Penguins shooters to clinch the win for Hershey.
The Bears went up 1-0 at 12:26 of the first with their second power play of the contest. Julien Brouillette pulled wide down the right side and threw a backhander on Thiessen that Potulny deposited on the rebound.
Skating up a man in the second period, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was able even the score as some tic-tac-toe passing found Ben Street alone on the near post for a one-timer to the top corner. It would be the only power play goal for the Penguins in nine opportunities.
Thiessen made 22 saves on 24 shots through overtime as his record goes to 9-4-2.
