
Sharks Can't Buy Win on Black Friday

PORTLAND, ME - The Sharks scored twice in the third period to force overtime but allowed a power play goal in the extra session as Worcester fell 4-3 to the Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Friday evening.
Curt Gogol and Tommy Wingels scored in the third period to force overtime as the Sharks fired 47 shots on goal in the loss.
Tyler Eckford (2nd) gave the Pirates a 1-0 advantage after his quick shot from 60 feet found its way through traffic and just past the blocker side of Harri Sateri at 5:08. Exactly a minute later, Benn Ferriero (6th) snapped a quick one timer shot from the right slot past Curtis McElhinney on the power play at 6:08 to tie the score at 1-1. John McCarthy grabbed the primary assist on the score with a great feed from the left corner. Worcester maintained momentum throughout most of the opening frame outshooting Portland 15-6. Cam MacIntyre (3rd FM) and Igor Gongalsky (4th FM) exchanged blows to end the first period.
Rookie Andy Miele scored twice in a 2:53 second span in the 2nd half of the 2nd period to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes of play. Miele (6th) scored a fluky goal that deflected over Harri Sateri and fluttered just inside the crossbar at 14:45 to give Portland a 2-1 lead. Miele (7th) was at the right place at the right time at 17:38 after a point shot from on the power play missed the net and deflected off the end wall right onto his stick for his second score and a two goal lead for Portland. Cam MacIntyre (4th FM) made quick work on rookie Jordan Szwarz (1st FM) in a quick fight at 13:03. Worcester trailed by two scores despite outshooting Portland 29-15 through 40 minutes of play.
Worcester came barreling back in the third period with two goals on 18 shots to force overtime. Curt Gogol (3rd) wristed a puck into the net from deep in the right circle assisted from Marek Viedensky and James Livingston at 8:34. 108 seconds later, Tommy Wingels (3rd) finished off a great individual rush down the right wing as he roofed a tight-in shot past the Pirates netminder to tie the score at 3-3. The Sharks had several chances to take the lead late but couldn't muster another score.
In overtime, Taylor Doherty was whistled off for holding and the Pirates made the Sharks pay. Tyler Eckford's (3rd) first shot was blocked from the right circle, but he drilled the 2nd chance by Sateri at 3:19 to give Portland their first overtime victory of the season.
The Sharks record falls to 6-5-3-2 with 17 points through 16 games and to 2-1-3-1 on the road.
