Springfield Falcons News Release

The Springfield Falcons recorded a season high 44 shots on goal on Friday night, but in the end fell to the Adirondack Phantoms 5-1 at the Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, NY. The Falcons look to rebound on Saturday when they host the Connecticut Whale at the MassMutual Center.

Adirondack goaltender Michael Leighton made 43 saves and earned the game's first star. Springfield recorded the game's first six shots on goal and had a variety of quality scoring chances throughout the night, but Leighton held the fort for the Phantoms.

"You never know, if we are able to convert there early, maybe it changes the complexion of the game," said Falcons head coach Rob Riley. "We generated chances, had some good opportunities, just couldn't get a couple early enough."

Following the Falcons' strong start to the first period, Adirondack's Matt Walker scored the first period's lone goal at 10:21 giving the Phantoms a one goal lead through 20 minutes of play. Springfield recorded a season high for most shots in a period with 18 during the opening frame, but Leighton was able to keep Springfield off the scoreboard.

The Phantoms were able to break the game open in the second period scoring three times and taking a 4-0 lead through 40 minutes. Shane Harper scored his first marker of the period at 2:12 giving the Phantoms a two-goal advantage. Harper added his second goal of the period at 5:42 when he converted on the power play giving Adirondack a three-goal cushion. Brayden Schenn tallied his fifth goal of the year in the period's final minute concluding the scoring in the middle frame.

In the third period, the two teams exchanged goals as Tom Sestito converted for the Phantoms, while Matt Calvert stopped Leighton's shutout bid at 16:39 of the third period.
