Albany River Rats News Release

WILKES-BARRE, PA- River Rats forward Stefan Chaput broke Penguins goaltender John Curry's shutout bid with less than two minutes remaining, but Wilkes-Barre/Scranton fought off Albany's late comeback bid to earn a 2-1 final Saturday night at Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.

The River Rats came within inches of tying the game in the final seconds of action, but leading scorer Jerome Samson batted a bouncing puck just wide of an open goal as the final horn sounded. The teams faceoff again on Sunday in a 5:00 p.m. rematch at the Times Union Center.

The Penguins scored the first period's only goal at 11:47, when forward Wade Brookbank found an unmarked Wyatt Smith streaking through the slot for a one-time finish past River Rats goalie Justin Peters. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton forward Tyler Spurgeon doubled his club's lead late in the second period, stuffing-home a loose puck in the crease at 19:50. Brookbank and Joey Haddad each tallied assists on both Penguins goals.

Curry stopped 25-of-26 shots faced in the game to earn the win as the Penguins improved to 15-14-1-1 this season. Peters turned aside 29-of-31 shots faced, but took the loss as the River Rats fell to 18-12-1-2 this year. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton out-shot Albany 31-26 in the contest and went 0-for-4 on the power play; the River Rats were 0-for-3 on the man-advantage.

River Rats 2009-10 pro-rated season and flexible ticket packages are now on sale at the River Rats executive offices at the Times Union Center, by calling (518) 487-2244 or by logging onto www.albanyriverrats.com.
