Penguins Drop 3-1 Decision to Senators
April 13, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Senators goaltender Robin Lehner made 26 saves to lead Binghamton to a 3-1 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. With losses by Hershey and Connecticut, the Penguins have clinched home-ice advantage for their first-round series against the Bears.
The Penguins opened up the scoring on their first man-advantage of the contest. After Alexandre Picard had a superb keep-in at the Binghamton blueline, Ben Street slid a pass across the crease that Ryan Craig knocked by Lehner at 7:11.
Mike Hoffman evened the match for Binghamton at 15:19 when he flew down the right wing to get past the defense and slipped a backhand shot between the glove and leg pad of Penguins goalie Brad Thiessen.
The Senators took their first lead of the game at the 4:41 mark of the second frame as Pat Cannone weaved into the Penguins zone and rifled a wrist shot to left side of the net to make the score, 2-1.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton had a golden opportunity to tie the contest with a five-minute major power play mid-way through the period, but was only able to manage one shot in on Lehner.
With 3:17 left in regulation, Binghamton gathered the insurance goal when Thiessen went behind his net to play Pat Cannone's rim into the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton end. The puck kicked off the corner boards to the slot, where David Dziurzysky dumped it into the open cage to seal the win for the Senators.
Thiessen fell to 22-15-2 on the season with 14 saves on 17 shots. Lehner raised his record to 13-22-1.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins wrap up their regular season home schedule on Saturday, April 14 at 7:05 PM versus the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. For tickets and more information, call the Penguins at (570) 208-PENS or visit www.wbspenguins.com.
