
Penguins Down Americans in Overtime

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - In the their second overtime in as many games this week against the Rochester Americans, it was rookie Cody Sylvester tapping home the deciding tally to lift the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 2-1 win in preseason action at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
It was Rochester skating to an overtime victory against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Wednesday, but the Penguins would exact their revenge in Friday's re-match.
Trailing 1-0 with less than thirty seconds left in the third and skating on the power play, the Penguins pulled goalie Eric Hartzell in favor of the extra attacker for a 6-on-4 advantage. Brian Gibbons had his initial stuff shot denied by Amerks netminder Matt Hackett, but the rebound kicked to the far post for defenseman Mike Ratchuk to shovel into the open net with just 2.7 seconds remaining in regulation.
With 2:44 left the overtime period, Brendan Mikkelson skated the puck down the right side boards and slid a pass to the front of the net that a driving Sylvester knocked to the top left corner.
After a scoreless two periods of play, Colton Gillies gave Rochester the 1-0 lead early in the third when a bouncing puck settled at his feet and he ripped a snapshot from the right hashmark that found daylight over the shoulder of Hartzell.
Hartzell earned the win, making 11 saves on 12 shots over 31:01 of play. Starter Jeff Deslauriers stopped all seven shots he faced for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Hackett turned aside 23-of-25 for Rochester.
The Penguins went 1-for-3 on the power play and 7-for-7 on the penalty kill.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton continues its exhibition schedule against the Hershey Bears on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m. at GIANT Center. The Penguins host the Bears in Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 5:05 p.m.
