25 Terrific Seasons
Glens Falls is celebrating their 25th season hosting an AHL team joining an elite group of only 12 other cities who can make such a claim. It's a great hockey tradition with an old-school feel that began with the Adirondack Red Wings in 1979 and won four Calder Cups in their 20-year run at the GFCC. The Adirondack Phantoms are beginning their fifth season.
You Look Familiar....
The Adirondack Phantoms beginning training camp in Glens Falls on Monday with 32 players on their roster vying for spots on the team. The group includes some tryout and ECHL contract players as well as a couple of veteran newcomers. But fans should be able to easily recognize some of their favorite players too. 19 players on the current training camp roster have played with Adirondack before. That group includes fan favorites such as Zack FitzGerald, Jason Akeson, Tye McGinn, Cullen Eddy, Rob Bordson, Brandon Manning, Marcel Noebels and goalie Cal Heeter. They are joined by some of the newer prospects who joined the Phantoms in the final couple weeks of last season such as Mark Alt, Nick Cousins and Kyle Flanagan.
Veteran Presence
A couple of veterans with terrific hockey pedigrees join the Phantoms as well. 31 year old Kris Newbury has spent the past couple of seasons with the New York Rangers organization. He has played in 72 career NHL games but it's his AHL statistics that will really catch your eye; 599 games, 142 goals, 297 assists, 439 points. Newbury is one of only two players to have racked up 60 or more points in the AHL in each of the last three seasons. And 32 year old goaltender Yann Danis signed with the Flyers organization and is looking forward to playing in the AHL city that is closest to his hometown of Montreal after spending the past couple of seasons in Oklahoma City and Edmonton. Danis was the AHL Goalie of the Year ("Baz" Bastien Memorial Award) just two years ago and has 141 career AHL wins as well as 53 career NHL games played with Edmonton, New Jersey, New York Islanders and Montreal.
Bench Boss
Terry Murray brings more NHL coaching experience to an AHL bench than any other coach in league history as he enters his second season with the Adirondack Phantoms. Murray rates 19th all-time in NHL history with 1,102 career games and is 18th all-time in career wins with 499. Murray, 62, was the head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers from 1994 to 1997 leading the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1997. Murray has coached some of the greatest players in NHL history in a career that has also seen him lead the Los Angeles Kings, Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers.
Riley Cote returns for his fourth season as assistant coach with the Phantoms. The 31 year old originally from Winnipeg won a Calder Cup for the Philadelphia Phantoms in 2005 and played a combined 324 career games in Philadelphia for the Phantoms and Flyers from 2004 through 2010. He racked up a combined 1,980
