WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - In an effort to help the Riverside Park Ice Rink rebuild after the September floods, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have donated $1,200 to the outdoor facility located in Tunkhannock, PA.

Riverside Park Ice Rink was completely wiped out during the floods that swept through the Wyoming Valley last fall. Usually a scene out of a Canadian winter, the rink has been a home to hundreds of pond hockey players in the Tunkhannock area since 1996.

With the aid from the local community, rink-manager Sam Elias has been able to raise enough funds to rebuild the rink and, weather permitting, have it ready for play on Friday, January 13th.

The Penguins' donation went to replace the warming shed at Riverside Park Ice Rink that also housed over 100 pairs of skates for public use. The Penguins, in conjunction with the Jr. Penguins, are also holding an equipment drive to benefit Riverside Park Ice Rink. New or used sticks and skates can be donated at the Penguins' Coal Street Ice Rink in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

The construction and maintenance of the rink is reliant entirely on help from volunteers and donations from the local community. Use of the ice is free to those with their own equipment or a $1 donation to rent skates or stick from the rink.

For donation and volunteer information, visit www.tunkicerink.com or the Riverside Park Ice Rink Facebook page.
