Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Hershey Bears scored with 2.7 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but Adam Payerl's goal in the extra session allowed the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to prevail, 3-2, on Sunday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Trailing by a score of 1-0 in the final minutes of the second period, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton pulled even during a 5-on-4 advantage. Tom Kostopoulos provided the traffic in front of Hershey's crease on Josh Archibald's bid from the blueline and Jean-Sebastien Dea put home the loose puck with 4:14 remaining until the intermission for this eighth of the season.

Thirty-eight seconds later, Bears goalie Philipp Grubauer got a pad on a snap shot from Payerl, but Dominik Uher was left alone in the slot to net his fourth of the year and give the Penguins their first lead of the match, 2-1.

It looked as though that would be the final at the end of regulation, but Hershey was able to score with the extra attacker to stun the crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena. With time winding down, Chris Brown took the puck through center ice and launched a slapshot from the right wall that eluded the glove of Jeff Zatkoff with less than three seconds left.

The Penguins shook off the late tally and took advantage of a turnover by the Bears in overtime. A 3-on-1 rush ensued for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and while Grubauer stopped the initial redirect by Derrick Pouliot, he could not get across the crease in time to stop the one-timer by Adam Payerl at 3:10 of the extra period. The first goal of the year for Payerl was the Penguins' fifth overtime game-winner this season.

After a scoreless first period, the Bears were awarded two power plays in the opening minutes of the middle frame. It was on the second of those man-advantages that Hershey took a 1-0 lead when Connor Carrick's point shot tipped off a stick and sneaked inside the right post.

Zatkoff won his fourth straight start with 20 saves on 22 shots. Grubauer suffered the loss for Hershey, stopping 27-of-29. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went 1-for-7 on the man-advantage and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are back in action on Friday, Dec. 19 when they face the Albany Devils at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza at 7:05 p.m.
