Portland Pirates News Release

Worcester, MA.- The Portland Pirates (14-13-0-0) fell to the Worcester Sharks (11-12-2-0) by a tally of 1- 0 Sunday afternoon at the DCU Center in Worcester, Ma. It was the lone goal of the game, scored by the Sharks' Bryan Lerg, that proved to be the determiner in the loss. Prior to the game, both teams were looking to snap three game losing streaks.

The first period was overall uneventful with both teams having 11 shots on goal and both teams picking up two penalties. Both penalties for the Pirates were called on Evan Oberg, one for high-sticking at 8:07 and the other coming later in the period at 16:22 for hooking. Worcester penalties were on Taylor Fedun at 14:09 for slashing and Matt Taormina at 14:56 for hooking. Both the Pirates and Sharks failed to execute on power plays in the first period.

It was a different story in the second period when Worcester struck first and Lerg scored the only goal of the game on a power play at 4:22. The goal was assisted by Michael Haley and Matt Taormina. The power play goal resulted from a penalty call on Philip Samuelsson at 3:20 for boarding. Soon after the goal, another Portland penalty was called on Justin Hodgman at 5:46 for tripping. Worcester's only penalty in the period came at 15:46 when Eriah Hayes was called for goaltender interference. Portland went 0-4 on power plays this afternoon.

The Pirates continued to put pressure on the net during the 3rd period but J.P. Anderson (3-6-0) held his ground making some tremendous saves in the shutout. The one penalty of the third frame came against Worcester at 10:57 when Taormina was called for tripping. Anderson saved all 34 shots on goal this afternoon while Mike McKenna (9-10- 0) saved 25 out of 26 shots on goal.

The Portland Pirates will return home to the Cross Insurance Arena for 3 straight games this week starting on Wednesday, December 17 against the Manchester Monarchs in the race for the VIP Cup, presented by VIP Tires and service, at 7 p.m. The Pirates will also get a chance at revenge on this weekend's losses when the Providence Bruins come to town Friday, December 19 at 7 p.m., followed by another meeting with the Sharks on Saturday, December 20 at 7 p.m. A week long Christmas break for the Pirates will begin after that.
