
Penguins Assign Three to Wheeling

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins announced today that defenseman Nick D'Agostino has been assigned by the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL) to the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL). In addition, defenseman Peter Merth and forward Cody Sylvester have also been loaned to Wheeling.
Skating in his first professional season, D'Agostino has collected one goal, six assists and 11 penalty minutes in 25 contests with the Penguins. His first pro goal was the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over the Utica Comets on Dec. 14. A seventh-round pick by Pittsburgh in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, D'Agostino compiled 72 points (25g-47a) and 80 PIM in 132 games during four seasons at Cornell University (2009-13).
Merth, 26, has appeared in two games this year for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and registered seven penalty minutes. The fourth-year pro has played in 167 contests with the Nailers, totaling five goals, 36 assists and 229 penalty minutes. In 20 AHL games with the Penguins and Hamilton Bulldogs, Merth has posted three assists and 37 PIM.
Sylvester scored in his AHL debut on Nov. 20 at Rochester and went on to add another goal and 18 penalty minutes in 15 games with the Penguins. At the time of his recall on Nov. 18, Sylvester had recorded six points (5g-1a) and six penalty minutes over 12 games with Wheeling. The 21-year old rookie spent the 2012-13 season with the Calgary Hitmen (WHL), where he ranked first on the squad in goals (41), assists (49) and points (90).
