Penguins Assign Samuelsson to Wheeling

The Wheeling Nailers, AA affiliate for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced a transaction, which is effective immediately. The Nailers received defenseman Philip Samuelsson from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Samuelsson, 20, is currently playing in his first season of professional hockey, following two years at Boston College, which included a National Championship in 2010, while playing alongside fellow Nailer Matt Lombardi. During those two seasons, Philip accumulated five goals, 25 assists, and 30 points in 81 games. So far this season, Samuelsson has appeared in 42 games with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and has recorded one goal, seven assists, eight points, and 20 penalty minutes. His lone goal came as part of a multiple point performance against the Hershey Bears on November 11th.

The son of former Pittsburgh Penguin, Ulf Samuelsson has played in one game with Wheeling this season, notching one assist and two penalty minutes on February 29th in Elmira. Philip was originally selected by the Penguins in the second round (61st overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Samuelsson will join the Nailers on Wednesday, when they play on the road against the Chicago Express.
