March 14, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release
Bakersfield, California - The Utah Grizzlies defeated the Bakersfield Condors 3-2 Wednesday night at Rabobank Arena to win their fourth-straight game and start their four-game in five-night trip with a win.
Utah started the game with a strong first period as they controlled action and outshot the Condors 13-7. Dave Strathman gave Utah a 1-0 lead 8:36 into the game as he held the puck in and fired it in through traffic. John Armstrong and the ECHL's reigning Player of the Week Paul McIlveen kept the play alive in Utah's offensive end. Strathman extended his scoring streak to five-straight games and Armstrong pushed his scoring streak to three games.
The Grizzlies took a 2-0 lead 7:50 into the second as Ross Carlson and Ryan Turek rushed Utah up ice in transition and fed Ryan Watson who patiently pulled the trigger in the left circle for his second goal of the year. Carlson extended his scoring streak to six-straight games on the play.
Utah took a 2-1 lead to the third period and made it 3-1 6:35 into the third as Armstrong poked a puck away as Bakersfield tried to clear and C.J. Severyn rifled it home from the slot for his fourth goal of the year. Bakersfield made it 3-2 with 12:34 left, but would not get anything more.
Andrew Engelage moved into a tie for fourth in the ECHL with his 22nd win as he stopped 32 of 34 shots.
The win, moves Utah's magic number to one for clinching their fifth-straight playoff berth. The Grizzlies also move within two points of Stockton for the fifth spot in the Western Conference standings.
Utah is next in action Friday in Bakersfield at 8:10 p.m., before traveling to Stockton for games Saturday and Sunday.
