Penalties Kill Mavericks' Shot in Wichita

January 19, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks could not figure out how to get around Thunder goaltender, David Brown on Sunday night in Wichita. Plagued early and often by trips to the penalty box, the Mavericks were dealt a bad hand on the road against their Independence Cup rival, and took their fifth straight loss to the Wichita Thunder 2-1 Sunday night.

The game seemed to be starting out on the right skate for the Mavericks, with rookie Anders Franzon locking in the first goal of the game three minutes into play, assisted by Trevor Kell and Rob Kleebaum. Energy was up, and the Mavs were demonstrating an aggressive pace that frustrated the Thunder enough for them to start fights with Missouri in the opening frame. One such fight unfortunately caused enough of a distraction that Rob Kleebaum's goal past the Thunder net minder was waived off because the whistle to stop the fight just edged the puck crossing the goal line. That would end up being a very definitive call.

The Mavericks were unable to post another goal for the remainder of the game, hindered by thirty minutes of penalties, and connected with only one shot on goal in the third period.

Goaltender Shane Owen put up a spectacular performance between the Mavericks' pipes, making thirty saves in the night, keeping Missouri in the game.

The Mavericks play their next game on the road in Tulsa on Friday, January 24th, before returning home on Saturday the 25th to face the Oilers at the Independence Events Center.
