Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS (January 19th) - In front of its largest crowd of the season, Wichita (15-17-4) came from behind to clip the Missouri Mavericks (22-11-2) Sunday afternoon by the final score of 2-1. Jon Booras netted the game-winner with less than a minute remaining in the second period and the Thunder held off a late Mavericks' rally down the stretch to preserve the victory. Wichita has won the last five meetings against Missouri and leads the season-series 5-2-0. With the victory, the Thunder extended its winning-streak to four games and takes six points on the weekend. 8,002 fans flocked to INTRUST Bank Arena to witness the home team come out on top.
It didn't take Missouri long to strike first when Anders Franzon broke away down the left seam and lifted a wrist shot over David Brown's shoulder at 3:18. Missouri kept on the offensive as the visitors held the early edge in the shot department, firing six of the game's first seven shots. At 16:48, Wichita tied the game at one as RG Flath found Tomas Klempa at the front of the net and he got through a defender to put it home. The Mavericks almost re-took the lead as they headed up the ice on the rush and appeared to find the back of the net. Behind the play, Dustin Donaghy and Matt Stephenson had dropped the gloves which halted play and sent the two off for fighting majors.
Goaltending and defense told the story for most of the second period. The physical play continued when Henrik Odegaard and Ian Lowe tangled at 15:52 and were sent off for fighting. Late in the period, Stephenson was sent off for a cross check at 18:54 that nullified a Mavericks power play and the Thunder took advantage. A mad scramble at the front of the Missouri net ensued and Jon Booras banged in a rebound as he circled around the net at 19:14 to give Wichita the lead, up 2-1.
Missouri dug themselves a hole in the third period as they committed three-straight penalties that resulted in eight minutes of power play time for Wichita. The Thunder couldn't find the back of the net, but continued to lead by one down the stretch. Shane Owen was pulled as the Mavericks got a late offensive zone face-off. The Thunder held up defensively in the final minute and came away with the 2-1 victory.
Wichita moves into eighth place with the win. The Thunder gave up the first goal in both games against the Mavericks in consecutive games only to come back and get the victory. Matt Summers and RG Flath extend their point-streaks to four games with helpers in the contest. David Brown has won his last three starts, stopping 22 of 23. Shane Owen suffers his eighth loss of the year stopping 30 of 32 shots.
Wichita went 0-for-9 on the power play. Missouri was 0-for-5 with the man advantage. The two teams combined for 52 minutes in penalties and 20 infractions.
Wichita hits the road for the next three games starting on Tuesday night in Tulsa against the Oilers at 7:05 p.m.
