Pensacola Pelicans News Release
It was a wet night Thursday in Pensacola, but that didn't keep the Pelican faithful from attending the game between the Shreveport Sports and the Pelicans. A low scoring affair at Pelican Park kept the fans around until the 9th inning to watch Tony Pierce record his 18th save of the season, securing the Pelicans 3-2 victory. Juan Rocha hit his eighth homerun of the season to put the Pelicans ahead.
The Pelicans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Ed Montague started things off with a one out single. He then stole second base and was driven in by Jose Yepez who singled up the middle.
The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Pelicans until the top of the fourth when Chad Gambill scored on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Bryant, tying the game 1-1.
Pensacola would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Tim Dorn led off the inning with a single. With two outs Bo Brown drew a walk and was followed by Rolo Avila who reached on a single, Dorn came in to score on an errant throw home by the Shreveport shortstop.
Pelican starter Blake Allen turned in an impressive performance, getting one out in the seventh before being taken out for Bubba Dobson. Allen scattered six hits and struck out four while allowing no earned runs.
Shreveport managed to tie the game yet again in the top of the eighth when centerfielder Austin Easley drew a bases loaded walk that brought Neb Brown in to score.
The tie would quickly be broken as slugger Juan Rocha drove a pitch over the wall in left-center, giving the Pelicans a 3-2 lead going into the ninth. It was the eighth homerun of the season for Rocha, tying him with George Branch for the team lead.
Tony Pierce was brought in to close the game for the Pelicans and struck out the first two hitters before getting Neb Brown to pop up to shortstop to end the game. Pierce picked up his 18th save of the season, tying him for the league lead.
