Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Every run of Wednesday night's game was scored in extra innings as Reivaj Garcia scored on a wild pitch in the 13th inning to give the Myrtle Beach Pelicans a 6-5 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs in the first game of the series on Wednesday night. The 13-inning contest was the most innings played in a game at Pelicans Ballpark since May 31, 2017, where the Birds lost to Down East 4-3 in 14 innings. Wednesday's win pushed the Pelicans to a 41-28 record and 2-2 in the second half. Charleston dropped to 29-41 and 2-2 in the second half.
In the first nine innings, the Myrtle Beach pitching staff took center stage as Grant Kipp tossed five perfect innings with seven strikeouts, followed by Erian Rodriguez throwing four more shutout frames with four strikeouts and three hits, and one walk allowed. Charleston's first hit came in the top of the eighth after the first 21 batters were retired. Starlyn Pichardo (2-1) took the win with two runs, one earned in his two innings of work while fanning three.
After a quiet nine innings, the bats started to heat up in extras with Juan Mora (2-6, 2 RBI) and Pedro Ramirez (2-6, 2B, 2 RBI) each driving in a pair of runs in extra innings. Garcia (2-5) scored the winning run while pushing his hitting streak to eight with a multi-hit performance. 13 runners were left on base in the winning effort.
Charleston starter Yoniel Curet threw five shutout frames with four hits and a walk allowed and four strikeouts. Michael Sansone (3-2) took the loss by being charged with four runs, two earned across his 2 2/3 innings. Juan Rodriguez threw the wild pitch that scored Garcia.
Despite the 13-inning game, the RiverDogs were held to just seven hits with Ryan Spikes (2-6, RBI) leading the team with the only multi-hit performance. Enderson Delgado (1-2, 2B, RBI) smashed the only extra-base hit with an RBI double. The RiverDogs stranded 10 and went 5-for-18 with runners in scoring position.
It was a scoreless game as the Pelicans and RiverDogs headed to the 10th. In the top half, the RiverDogs put runners on the corners as Odalys Peguero hit a bunt single on the left side to score Spikes for the game's first run. Charleston loaded the bases with a walk for Christopher Barete who singles up the middle to plate another run. Peguero was thrown out at home to keep it a 2-0 game.
Myrtle Beach responded quickly as Ramirez took the second pitch of the inning to right-center field that scored Morel from second. After the next two batters were retired, Chavers lined a single to right to bring home Ramirez from third and tied the game at two.
The visitors went back up as Delgado hit an RBI ground-rule double to right-center for a 3-2 RiverDogs' lead.
The Pelicans mirrored the RiverDogs once again as Mora hit a one-out RBI single on a line drive to right that scored Jefferson Rojas from second to bring it to 3-3.
After a scoreless 12th, the RiverDogs took another lead in the top of the 13th. With runners on the corners, Pichardo balked to plate the run from third and move the runner to second. With two outs and a runner on third, Spikes hit a single that skipped through to left to extend the Charleston lead to 5-3.
Down to their final out, the Pelicans mounted another improbable comeback. With Chavers on third, Mora blooped a single in shallow left to score the first run and put the tying run on base. Garcia and Morel followed with singles to load the bases. Ramirez came up and hit a slow chopper to second base that was fielded by Cooper Kinney with a late throw to first with Mora scoring the tying run. Rodriguez came out of the bullpen and with Miguel Pabon batting, threw his second pitch low that skipped to the backstop as Garcia scored the winning run to give the Birds a 6-5 walk-off win. It was their third walk-off victory this season.
The series continues on Thursday night as the Pelicans meet the RiverDogs at 7:05 p.m.
