Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (May 10, 2016) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans stroked 11 hits and swiped six bases to defeat the Winston-Salem Dash 5-2 Tuesday at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
The Pelicans (16-14) offense had only scored nine runs over the previous four games.
Jonathan Martinez (3-1) turned in his fifth straight start of six innings or more, allowing one run on seven hits over six innings. He has now allowed three runs or less in 30 of his last 32 starts, dating back to 2014.
In a scoreless game in the bottom of the third, Gleyber Torres, who had three hits for the second straight night, pulled a single into left before stealing second. Ian Happ then drove him in with a single to put Myrtle Beach on top. Two batters later, Jason Vosler singled to right to plate Happ and make it 2-0. Vosler advanced to second on the throw to the plate. The next batter was Daniel Lockhart, who chopped a grounder to shortstop. Lockhart beat out the throw and Vosler hustled from second to home to give the Pelicans a 3-0 lead.
The trio of Happ, Vosler and Lockhart each recorded multi-hit contests.
The Birds' speed continued to be a factor in the next inning. Shawon Dunston Jr. legged out an infield single before stealing second and third. When Dash (11-21) catcher Brett Austin threw to second base to try and get the trail runner, the ball bounced into center field, allowing Dunston to score and make it 4-0 Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans stole a season-high six bases Tuesday, and have swiped 19 in a row without getting caught in the last nine games.
Winston-Salem's Adam Engel followed with a leadoff double down the left field line in the fifth. Hunter Jones then singled him home on a single to right to make it 4-1.
With the score still 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Torres doubled to left center to start the inning. Three batters later, Vosler tripled to the wall in center to extend the Pelicans lead to 5-1.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, Marcus Davis singled to left to make the score 5-2. However, the baserunner Gerson Montilla was tagged out at third base to end the game. Jose Rosario earned the save, his third of the year.
The Pelicans now lead the season series over the Dash 7-3.
The teams will meet again for the second of three games Wednesday night. RHP Zach Hedges (3-2, 1.69 ERA) will get the nod for Myrtle Beach, while Matt Cooper (1-2, 3.71 ERA) will go for Winston-Salem. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, the MiLB First Pitch app and TuneIn.
