ZEBULON, NC - Joseph Daris started the 10th with a triple to deep right-center and Ryan Gebhardt brought him in with a game winning single to left while leading the Mudcats to a 4-3 walk-off win against Potomac at Five County Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Mudcats (13-17) had a 3-2 lead going into the ninth, but a misplay between Gebhardt and first baseman Joey Meneses between second and first allowed the Nationals (16-13) to score the tying run and force extras. The misplay did not result in an error, but it took away a victory from starter Max Povse and gave a blown save to Evan Phillips.
Povse pitched through seven full innings on Tuesday night and allowed just two runs while scattering seven hits. He also finished with seven strikeouts and worked through the seventh for the second time this season.
Wes Parsons pitched a scoreless eighth and earned his second hold before then turning the game over for Phillips (W, 1-1, 1.29). Jose Marmolejos started the ninth with a leadoff double off Phillips and later moved to third on a groundout to first.
The Mudcats then pulled their infield in and Phillips managed to get another groundball while facing Drew Ward, but a miscommunication between Gebhardt and Meneses allowed the ball to roll deep behind first. Meneses eventually recovered and used the misplayed grounder to record an out at first, but Marmolejos managed to score to tie the game.
Phillips eventually finished the ninth without allowing another baserunner and then turned in a perfect tenth. Povse, Parsons and Phillips combined to strikeout eight while helping to lead the Mudcats to the victory.
The Nationals did score first in Tuesday's game. They brought one across in the first when Andrew Stevenson scored on a Marmolejos double play groundout. Daris drove in a run with a RBI single in Carolina's two run second, but the Nationals scored once in the fourth to tie it up at 2-2. Jordan Edgerton then helped the Mudcats take the lead again by starting the Carolina half of the fourth with a double and scoring later in the inning on a force out hit into by Tanner Murphy.
Carolina led 3-2 after the fifth and all the way through the eighth before losing the lead in the ninth. Daris was 2-for-4 with the game winning run and a RBI. Braxton Davidson was 2-for-4 and Joey Meneses was 1-for-4. Meneses has now hit safely in a career high 14 straight games.
Erick Fedde started for Potomac and held the Mudcats to three runs (two earned) on six hits over six and 1/3 innings pitched. Reliever Dakota Bacus (0-1, 3.38) worked the rest of the seventh and pitched through the end of the game and took the loss.
The Mudcats took a 1-0 series lead with Tuesday's victory. The series will continue on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. with RHP Ryan Clark (0-3, 6.12) starting for the Mudcats.
Wednesday's game is an Education Day start for the Mudcats. The current home stand also features Boy Scouts Night presented by Cutter on Friday, May 13, a drawstring bag giveaway presented by A Plus Family Care (first 1,200 kids ages 14 and under) on Saturday, May 14 and Bark in the Park Day presented by Dirty Dogs Spa on Sunday, May 15.
