Pelicans Quickly Shut Out Fireflies 2-0
June 11, 2024 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
In their first sub-two-hour game of the year, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans took down the Columbia Fireflies 2-0 on Tuesday night. It was the quickest nine-inning game in the Carolina League this season. With the win, the Pelicans improved to 26-31 while the Fireflies had their six-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 30-26.
The Myrtle Beach pitching staff didn't walk anybody and allowed just four hits as Kenten Egbert (4-2) grabbed the win with five shutout frames and three hits allowed while striking out four. Vince Reilly tossed two innings in relief and Nico Zeglin closed the game with four strikeouts across the final two innings to pick up his third save of the year.
Two solo homers from Andy Garriola (1-3, HR, RBI) and Alfonsin Rosario (1-4, HR, RBI) got the job done for Myrtle Beach. Ismael Mena (2-3, BB) posed a multi-hit game for the Birds.
In the longest outing of his career, Felix Arronde (3-5) took the loss by allowing both home runs through his seven-inning start. Arronde allowed five hits and two walks while striking out five.
Blake Mitchell (2-4) tallied multiple hits with a pair of singles. Erick Pena (1-3, 2B) hit a double for the only extra-base hit.
Garriola led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to right field on the very first pitch. It was his 11th of the season.
Rosario cranked his seventh home run of the season over the left field bleachers to lead off the seventh and made it a 2-0 lead.
The Pelicans and Fireflies meet for game two of the series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m.
