Pelicans Never Trail in Series-Evening Win

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - In a game that was long overdue for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Birds led from wire to wire in a contest and exorcised some Grand Strand demons, snapping their six-game home losing streak by trouncing the Potomac Nationals 10-5 on a chilly night at BB&T Coastal Field.

Jose Ortegano was given free reign from pitch counts to toss five innings for the first time in this young season, surrendering just one run, a solo round-tripper from Tyler Moore, while striking out five and not walking a batter. Ortegano (1-2) mixed up his repertoire of pitches to keep the P-Nat batters off balance all night long, allowing just four hits in his time on the mound.

On the offensive end, the Pelicans finally broke through, reaching double digits in runs for the first time since a 15-5 victory over the Frederick Keys on April 15. Gerardo Avila led the charge, rapping out three hits off A.J. Morris (0-2) including his third home run of the season. He knocked in three in addition to finishing just a double shy of the cycle. Jesus Sucre also had a big night for the ballclub, finishing 2-for-4 and knocking his second home run of the season in the seventh inning to break the game wide open. A night after the 3-4-5 hitters in the Pelicans lineup went 1-for-12 with five strikeouts, those same three hitters finished a combined 5-for-12 with a pair of homers, seven RBI, and eight runs scored.

Shortstop Amadeo Zazueta also knocked his second home run of the season, a solo shot in the seventh inning off reliever Jesse Estrada.

The Pelicans can go for their first series win since the season's opening four-game set with the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Thursday night as Opening Day starter Randall Delgado (0-2, 3.57) will get the nod against left-hander Evan Bronson (1-1, 6.28).

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 ET and it will be Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark with dollar drafts from 6-8 pm presented by Budweiser, Malibu's Surf Club, and the Weekly Surge. It will also be Infomercial Night at BB&T Coastal Field, making its glorious return with all the fake infomercials you could ever want crammed into one incredible evening. After the final out is recorded, stick around the ballpark for a spectacular fireworks extravaganza!
