Five-Run Eighth Pushes K-Tribe Past Hillcats

April 28, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Lynchburg lost a late lead and fell 5-3 on Wednesday at Kinston. The Hillcats are 4-0 in series openers on their current 13-game road swing, and 0-8 in all games that have followed.

The game stayed scoreless all the way into the sixth innings thanks to outstanding start from the Hillcats Travis Webb and the Indians T.J. House. Webb dealt five and 1/3 scorell innings and House let up just one run in five plus innings of action.

In the sixth though, Lynchburg would plate a pair to take a 2-0 lead. Josh Fellhauer chopped an RBI single over the head of the K-Tribe first baseman for the first run and Neftali Soto lined his first home run of the season out to center for the second. Fellhauer extended his season-long hitting streak to nine games with his RBI base-hit.

Kinston would break through in a big way in the bottom of the eight inning as they would bat around and score five runs to take a 5-2 lead. Abner Abreu smacked a two-run triple off the wall in center field and Richard Martinez slapped a two-run double down the third base line in the inning.

The Hillcats would plate a run in the ninth inning after a lead-off double by Dave Sappelt, but they would get no closer and fell 5-3 in the middle-game of the three-game set. Andrew Bowman (0-1) got the loss for Lynchburg (7-12) and Travis Turek got the win (1-1) and Steve Smith (5) the save for Kinston (8-11).

The rubber match in the three-game series is now set for Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at Grainger Stadium. Right-hander Mark Serrano (1-0, 4.50) will get the call for the Cats opposite fellow righty Joey Mahalic (1-0, 3.07) for the K-Tribe. You can tune-in to catch all the live action beginning at 6:40 p.m. with the Hillcats On-Deck Show on 105.5 FM KD Country and on the web at lynchburg-hillcats.com.
