P-Nats Lose Home Run Derby to Pelicans

April 28, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release

(MYRTLE BEACH, SC) The Potomac Nationals saw their three-game winning streak snapped by the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Wednesday night in a slugfest that featured five home runs and eight pitchers. The Pelicans scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 10-5 victory that leveled the three-game series at one apiece.

A.J. Morris surrendered a two-out homer in the first inning to Gerardo Avila to open the scoring. After a pair of 1-2-3 innings, the righthander Morris ran into more trouble in the fourth. After Gerry Rodriguez reached on a fielding error, Avila struck again with a run scoring triple to left. Jesus Sucre singled in Avila and later scored on a Shane Moody ground out that made it 5-1.

The Nationals scored their first run on Tyler Moore's first home run of 2010 in the second inning. Moore struck again in the eighth with a mammoth two-run blast, but the Pelicans had done far too much damage at that point.

In the seventh, Jesse Estrada had his most difficult outing of the season. After retiring Cole Miles to open the frame, Estrada ran into trouble. Amadeo Zazueta homered, Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and Gerardo Avila singled. Sucre then launched a fastball into the left field bleachers and the Pelicans were ahead 10-2.

The Nats rallied in the ninth, loading the bases and scoring on a single by Edgardo Baez. But Tyrelle Harris, making his 2010 debut retired Moore on a spectacular defensive play by third baseman Shane Moody to end the threat.

The series will be decided tomorrow night beginning at 7:05 PM. Evan Bronson will look to secure the P-Nats' second straight series victory against Randall Delgado. The broadcast can be heard on potomacnationals.com beginning at 6:50 PM.
