Pelicans Game Notes

July 29, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LHP Brad Furnish (0-2, 13.50) at LHP Robbie Ross (9-4, 2.24)

PERFECT NO MORE: Last night's wild come-from-behind victory marked the first time Hillcats closer Ryan Buchter has blown a save this year. After converting his first ten save chances starting with his May 29 debut, the lefty coughed up three runs and took the loss last night. It's the second time this season that the Pelicans have snapped an opposing closer's perfect run of ten or more saves. On June 12 Kinston's Preston Guilmet was a perfect 14-for-14 and held a 2-1 lead over the Pelicans with two outs in the ninth. Mitch Hilligoss singled in the tying run to hand Guilmet his first blown save. Santiago Chirino was thrown out trying to score the go-ahead run and the game famously went 23 innings to become the longest game in Carolina League history. Guilmet has converted his last 12 save opportunites and is 26-of-27.

TAKE THAT!: Travis Adair had his third consecutive 3-for-3 game last night and also walked in his last two trips to key the Myrtle Beach comeback. He's knocked a hit in his last nine at bats and has reached base in his last 11 plate appearances. If he starts 3-for-3 again tonight, he will equal the Carolina League record for consecutive hits of 12 (Kenny Kuhn, 1958 Burlington Indians). Drafted by the Braves in 2008 and released after two seasons in their farm system, Adair's had a big year against Lynchburg, the affiliate of his former parent club. In eight games against the Hillcats, Travis is 15-for-27 in running up a .556 batting average.

HOME COOKIN': The Pelicans improved their league-best home record to 36-14 and now hold a winning home mark against all seven Carolina League opponents. At BB&T Coastal Field the Birds are 4-3 against Lynchburg and Potomac, 4-2 against Kinston, 5-2 against Winston-Salem, 5-1 against league-leading Frederick, 6-1 against Salem and finished their home season series against Wilmington at 8-2. Their .720 winning percentage is tied for the second-best among all full-season professional teams. The Milwaukee Brewers are 36-14 at Miller Park, but both the Brew Crew and the Birds trail the San Antonio Missions, whose 39-11 record at Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium (.780) is the best home record in pro ball.

WOW...JUST WOW: The Texas Rangers are regarded as having one of baseball's best farm systems. On the field in 2011, the Rangers are showing they're far and away the club with the best minor league affiliates. Entering play on Friday, the cumulative record of the Rangers' minor league teams is 311-222 (.583), an astounding 18 and a half games better than the second-best organizational record, the Dodgers' 290-238 mark (.549). All seven Rangers affiliates are over .500 and amazingly, Myrtle Beach's record of 58-45 is tied with Double-A Frisco for the second worst mark in the system. Low-A Hickory (61-40) won the South Atlantic League first-half title and are leading in the second half as well. Triple-A Round Rock is 62-44 and in first place in the PCL Northern division. In Short Season ball, Spokane is 21-20, The AZL Rangers lead their league at 21-8 and the DSL Rangers are playing .600 ball at 30-20.
