July 29, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Lynchburg, VA- The Hillcats fell into a hole after committing four errors in the game. However, three home runs and some timely hitting were enough to make up for it, and Lynchburg came away with an 8-7 win over the Salem Red Sox Friday night.

The Red Sox took an early lead. In the top of the first inning, Dan Butler singled home Derrik Gibson to put Salem ahead 1-0.

After Stolmy Pimentel kept the Hillcats quiet four innings, he departed the game, and Anatanaer Batista took the mound for the Red Sox in the fifth. The first batter he faced, Marcus Lemon, hit a home run down the right field line to tie the game at one. L.V. Ware grounded out, but Keenan Wiley singled, and Andrelton Simmons reached on an error. With Phil Gosselin up, both runners advanced on a double steal, and Gosselin came through with a single to score both. The next batter, Joey Terdoslavich, hit his 14th home run of the season to give the Hillcats a 5-1 lead.

Defensive miscues cost the Hillcats in the top of the sixth. The first bater, Alex Valdez, hit a pop up to shallow right-center. Gosselin went back on it, and seemed to be underneath, but Simmons ranged all the way from short and the two got their feet tangled and fell. The ball landed in the grass and Valdez ended up on second base. The Hillcats committed two errors later in the inning, and Butler hit a three-run home run. When the dust cleared, six Red Sox had crossed home plate, and Salem had a 7-5 lead.

The Hillcats responded in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Ware hit a solo home run out to left field. Keenan Wiley followed with a double, and two batters later, Gosselin came through with a single, tying the game at seven.

Tom Ebert, who came into the game for Salem in the sixth, worked a scoreless seventh before entering the eighth. He struck out the first two batters he faced, Wiley and Simmons. Gosselin grounded up the middle, and then Terdoslavich hit a drive down the line in right. It rolled to the wall and Gosselin was able to score all the way from first to put the Hillcats up 8-7.

Andrew Wilson came into the game to attempt the save in the ninth. He walked the leadoff batter, Miles Head. Valdez came up attempting to bunt, but Wilson threw four straight balls to him, putting runners on first and second with nobody out. Vladimir Frias successfully dropped down a bunt, advancing both runners. Wilson struck out the next batter, and then finally got Gibson to fly out to center to end the game and earn his fifth save of the year.

Mark Lamm (1-0) pitched two scoreless inning to earn his first professional win of his career. Ebert (4-4) took the loss.

The Hillcats snapped their three-game skid and are now 12-22 in the second half. The Red Sox fell to 14-20.

Salem returns to City Stadium tomorrow for the second game of a three-game series. Righty David Hale (2-4) will take the mound for Lynchburg, and will face lefty Drake Britton (1-10). First pitch is at 6:05 pm, and gates will open at 5.
