Winston-Salem Dash News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Jared Mitchell's run-scoring double in the eighth inning snapped a late tie, and Winston-Salem notched its fifth straight win, 3-2 over Myrtle Beach on Friday night at BB&T Coastal Field. The streak ties the longest consecutive string of wins for the Dash during the 2011 season.
After two scoreless innings to start the ballgame, the Dash (19-15, 51-53) got on the board in the third. Kyle Colligan, in his first game since injuring his ankle on Saturday, singled to start the frame. He moved to second when Tyler Saladino singled off the pitcher Robbie Ross. The runners moved to second and third after Mitchell grounded out, and with two outs Brady Shoemaker lined a single into left field to score Colligan and Saladino to put the Dash up 2-0.
The Pelicans (18-17, 58-46) scored one run in the fourth against Dash starter Brad Furnish. Jared Bolden led off with a triple, and scored on Jared Prince's groundout to Saladino. Aside from the run, Furnish had a stellar outing. Coming into the game, he hadn't pitched since July 16 and threw five innings. He gave up one earned run on three hits, but didn't garner a decision.
Andre Rienzo relieved Furnish in the sixth, and surrendered a lead-off double to Andres James. Leury Garcia then sacrificed James to second before Bolden doubled home James to tie the game at two.
Rienzo settled down after the two doubles and went on to retire eight of the next ten batters he faced. Meanwhile, the Dash got to the Birds' bullpen in the eighth inning. Saladino started with a walk, and moved to second on a wild pitch. Mitchell then doubled home Saladino to give Winston a 3-2 advantage.
After three innings of relief, Rienzo was pulled for Ryan Kussmaul. Rienzo (3-4), in his second game back from his stint on the disabled list, got the win. He gave up one earned run on two hits and struck out a batter. Kussmaul closed the door in the ninth with a one-two-three frame to earn his fourth save in as many opportunities. Myrtle Beach reliever Ryan Kelly (3-5) was hit with the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth.
The win moves the Dash into a virtual tie for first place with the Kinston Indians. Winston can leapfrog Kinston, pending the result of the Kinston - Wilmington game that wasn't completed upon the end of Winston's game. If the K-Tribe loses, the Dash move into first place in the Carolina League Southern Division.
Winston-Salem and Myrtle Beach continue their three-game weekend series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at BB&T Coastal Field. LHP Matt Wickswat (4-1, 3.14) starts for the Dash against LHP Miguel De Los Santos (2-2, 2.89). Fans can catch all the action starting at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
