Pelicans Game Notes
June 30, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
RHP Brett Brach (4-5, 3.11) at RHP Barret Loux (7-3, 3.44)
OH NO, NOT AGAIN: Pardon the Pelicans and Indians for having flashbacks last night. After their record-setting 23-inning marathon on June 12, their first meeting since was going to extra innings once again. The Birds walked off with a ten-inning victory, so the newly-minted record is safe for another day. The June 12 game at Grainger Stadium went 23 innings, making it the longest game in the 66-year history of the Carolina League. 15 players logged eight or more at bats and both catchers, Zach Zaneski of Myrtle Beach and Kinston's Roberto Perez, caught every inning for their respective teams.
A-HOY MATEY!: Jared Hoying only hit one ball out of the infield, but he was the hitting hero for Myrtle Beach last night. Of his four base hits, three were infield singles, the last of which was the game-winner in the tenth. Last year's Northwest League MVP has struggled at times in his first full-season in the pros, but has had a torrid past ten days. Jared has run up a seven-game hitting streak while batting .455 (15-33) with four doubles, two triples and eight RBI. Batting just .220 entering play on June 18, the Fort Loramie, OH native hads raised his average to .252.
ELECTRIFYING DEBUT: Lefty Miguel De Los Santos made a terrific debut in relief for the Pelicans last night, retiring six of the seven batters he faced, four on strikes. He's battled injuries and ineffectiveness this season, but turned in his best performance of the season. Baseball America's tenth-ranked Texas prospect gets the start on Saturday in Lynchburg.
