WOODBRIDGE, VA (JUNE 30, 2011) - Paul Demny and two Potomac relievers held Winston's bats in check for most of the night as the Nationals beat the Dash 4-2 on Thursday evening at Pfitzner Stadium. New Dash pitcher Jake Petricka took the loss in his Carolina League debut, allowing two runs in 3.1 innings.

Petricka, the White Sox' best minor league starting pitching prospect, had command issues in his first non-rehab start in six weeks. He walked J.R. Higley with two outs in the first inning, threw a wild pitch, and gave up an RBI single to Justin Bloxom to give the Nationals (4-4, 33-44) a 1-0 lead.

Winston-Salem (4-3, 36-41) tied the game in the second inning on Austin Yount's two-out RBI double to left field that brought home Nick Ciolli.

The game stayed even until the fourth, Petricka's last inning. Steven Souza walked to start off the inning and moved to third two batters later on J.P. Ramirez' single. Petricka (0-1) was lifted from the ballgame at that point and Orlando Santos entered in relief. The next batter, Eury Perez, grounded a pitch to second base. Daniel Wagner tagged out Ramirez, but had no other play and Souza scored from third base to break the tie.

Petricka went 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks with one strikeout. His performance was hindered by allowing the leadoff man to reach base in all four of the innings he started. Petricka threw 58 pitches, 31 for strikes.

The Nationals added to their lead in the sixth inning against Santos. Souza started the inning with a double and scored on Ramirez' double to left. Francisco Soriano made it 4-1 P-Nats with a base hit to center field later in the inning.

Tyler Saladino got Winston back to within a pair with a solo home run to lead off the eighth, but the Dash could not get another player into scoring position for the rest of the night as they dropped their second straight game to the Nationals.

Demny (5-7) earned the win after yielding just one run on five hits and no walks over seven innings. He struck out a career-high eight batters. Hector Nelo pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to collect his sixth save. Petricka was charged with the loss.

The loss served Winston-Salem with its first series defeat of the second half and the team has lost back-to-back games for the first time since the All-Star break. The Dash look to avoid the sweep as the series concludes on Friday night when LHP Joe Serafin (0-6, 5.80) looks to pick up his first win of the season against RHP Cameron Selik (2-5, 3.45). First pitch from Pfitzner Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the audio broadcast can be heard on www.wsdash.com beginning at 6:45.

The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for a special Independence Day weekend filled with fireworks and fun on Saturday. Fireworks will follow each of the games on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, with all games starting at 7 p.m.

Fans may purchase tickets for every game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or by visiting www.wsdash.com.
