Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Pelicans and Kinston Indians seemed headed for extra innings once again. Barret Loux and Brett Brach dueled on Thursday night as the game was still scoreless into the ninth inning. Kinston plated a run in the top half on a Chase Burnette bloop single and Travis Adair bounced into a double play to end a 1-0 Indians win in front of 4,471 at BB&T Coastal Field.

Loux was brilliant in his start for the Pelicans. The right-hander set a new career-high with 11 strikeouts in six innings of work, scattering six singles and walking one. Loux took a no decision, but has been stellar in his first professional season. The Houston native is 5-0 with a 2.27 ERA in his last eight starts.

He was matched every step of the way and then some by Brach (5-5). The Kinston righty shut out the Birds for eight innings, allowing only five singles and striking out three without issuing a walk.

Joe Ortiz (4-3) worked a scoreless seventh and eighth and the deadlock carried into the ninth inning. Adam Abraham got the decisive rally started with a leadoff double. Abner Abreu laid down a bunt that Ortiz fielded off the mound and threw to third to try and nab pinch-runner Delvi Cid. Cid beat the throw, both runners were safe and the K-Tribe was set up with runners at the corners with nobody out. Burnette hit a flare into center field that fell in front of a diving Ryan Strausborger to send home the first run of the game.

With three outs to get in the ninth, Kinston did not turn to closer Preston Guilmet, who worked one inning last night, instead going with righty Jose Flores (S, 2). Myrtle Beach rallied with one out as Zach Zaneski singled and pinch-runner Andres James moved to third on a Mitch Hilligoss single.

With the tying run 90 feet away with only one out, Adair bounced a grounder to second baseman Casey Frawley, who flipped to shortstop Justin Toole for the second out of the inning. Adair seemed to beat Toole's relay to first, but base umpire Aaron Roberts ruled the runner out and Kinston evened the three-game at one apiece with a 1-0 win.

The win puts the K-Tribe back in first in the Southern Division second-half standings at 6-2. First-half champion Myrtle Beach sits a game back at 5-3 after the loss.

The series finale on Friday night features a rubber-game matchup of two of the Carolina League's best pitchers. Wins leader Robbie Ross (8-2, 2.67) goes for the Pelicans against ERA leader Drew Pomeranz (2-2, 1.81) of Kinston. First pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
