 Frederick Keys

Gomez Notches 900 in Shutout Victory

June 30, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

The Keys surrendered eight hits on Thursday night but the Hillcats left nine men on stranded on base as Frederick blanked Lynchburg, 4-0. With the win, Keys manager Orlando Gomez recorded his 900th victory in his managerial career. In addition, LHP Nick Haughian improved to 5-4 on the season after he tossed six scoreless innings in his tenth start of the season.

Frederick scored three of its four runs in the third inning. Facing LHP Blaine Sims, CF Miguel Abreu led off the inning with a double to right-center. LF Kipp Schutz followed with a RBI double to left field which gave the Keys a 1-0 lead. After DH Adam Donachie grounded out to short for the first out of the inning, 3B Dale Mollenhauer hit a ball off the center field wall. Schutz misread the ball in the air and was only able to advance to third on the double. The Schutz mistake proved to be irrelevant as both Schutz and Mollenhauer scored on a Brian Ward double down the third-base line.

The three-run third was plenty of run support for Haughian. Lynchburg had a runner in scoring position in the second, fourth, and sixth inning but failed to score a run. Haughian exited the game after he threw six shutout frames. On the evening, he surrendered five hits, walked one, and struck out five.

The Keys added another run in the top of the seventh after RHP Andrew Russell uncorked back-to-back wild pitches. Brian Ward scored on the second wild pitch by Russell.

Lynchburg loaded the bases with one out in the eighth but once again, they were unable to score. LHP Chris Petrini struck out 1B Joey Terdoslavich for the second out of the inning and then Orlando Gomez called on closer Sean Gleason for the final out. Facing Gleason, 3B Joe Leonard grounded out to SS Manny Machado to end the inning.

Gleason closed out the ninth for his league-leading 21st save of the season. On the night, Nick Haughian improved to 5-4 while Blaine Sims dropped to 2-2.

In his 17th season as a manager, Orlando Gomez picked up career victory number 900 on Thursday night. In two seasons in Frederick, Gomez has a record of 117-100 (.539).

Frederick will look to take the three-game series from the Hillcats on Friday night in Lynchburg. RHP Bobby Bundy (7-5, 3.10) will take the hill for the Keys while Lynchburg turns to RHP Aaron Shafer (2-0, 1.48). First pitch from City Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
