Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LHP Robbie Ross (7-1, 2.59) at RHP Marty Popham (0-0, 3.44)
FIRST-PLACE SHOWDOWN: With the recent stellar play of the Kinston Indians, winners of 16 of their last 22, this weekend's three-game series at Historic Grainger Stadium loomed large on the horizon for the Pelicans. After two critical wins against Winston-Salem the last two nights, the Birds carry a four-game Southern-Division lead into Kinston tonight. The Indians were rained out in Wilmington last night for the first cancelled game in the Carolina League this season. The game will not be made up, so the Indians only have 11 games left while the Pelicans have ten. Myrtle Beach's magic number to clinch the first-half title and postseason berth now stands at seven.
ACE OF BASE: With a third-inning single last night Ryan Strausborger extended his on-base streak to 21 consecutive games. The Carolina League All-Star's run began May 19 in Winston-Salem and is now tied for the second-longest stretch in the league this year. Salem's Reynaldo Rodriguez also had a 21-gamer in April and Tyler Holt of Kinston had a 25-game run in May. Strausborger is batting .309 with a .352 on base percentage during the streak. Ryan has also hit safely in nine straight games to tie Travis Adair for the longest Pelicans hitting streak of 2011. Adair's streak was from April 14-23 and was stopped at single digits in Kinston before he was called up to Frisco.
GOIN' BACK TO CALI: The Carolina League announced the selections for the California-Carolina League All-Star Game that will be played Tuesday, June 21 in Modesto, CA. The Pelicans had five players named to the team, more than any other squad in the league. Pitchers Joe Wieland (5-3, 2.13) and Robbie Ross (7-1, 2.59) were among the nine pitchers chosen. Outfielder Ryan Strausborger (.298, 6 HR, 33 RBI, 20 SB) was named as a starter and catcher Zach Zaneski (.308, 6 HR, 27 RBI) was named as a reserve. Third baseman Mike Olt (.286, 10 HR, 34 RBI) received enough votes to start for the Carolina League team, but will not play due to a broken collarbone.
