Frederick Keys News Release
A night after the Keys eight-game winning streak came to an end, Frederick rebounded to win their sixth consecutive at Harry Grove Stadium as they defeated the Lynchburg Hillcats, 6-2. LHP Nick Haughian pitched a masterpiece en route to his third victory of the season. Haughian allowed three hits over seven shutout innings while striking out nine and walking one. With the win, the Keys improved to 38-23 as their magic number to clinch the first half Northern Division crown sits at five.
Frederick and Lynchburg remained scoreless entering the bottom of the third inning on Friday night. LHP Matt Crim entered the game for the Hillcats after LHP Dimasther Delgado tossed two scoreless in his return from the disabled list. DH Joe Oliveira led off the frame with a single into left field but was thrown out at second trying to stretch his base hit into a double. After CF Steve Bumbry walked and 2B Bobby Stevens was hit by a pitch, SS Jonathan Schoop got the Keys on the board with a RBI single to left. 1B Joe Mahoney followed up with a RBI single to right field to give Frederick a two-run advantage. In his return to Harry Grove Stadium, Mahoney reached on all five of his plate appearances. He finished the night 3-for-3 with a double, two walks, and a RBI.
In the top of the fourth, Haughian was helped out by an incredible defensive play. With one out, RF Adam Milligan hit a fly ball to deep right field that looked to be his 10th home run of the season but RF Tyler Kolodny had other ideas. Kolodny went back to fence, leaped up, and robbed Milligan of a solo shot.
Joe Oliveira belted his first career home run in the fourth inning as he pushed the lead for the Keys out to three runs.
Haughian finished out his night with a 1-2-3 seventh inning. In his seventh start of the season, Haughian struck out a season-high nine batters in seven innings. The seven-inning performance was also a season-best for the lefty.
The Keys added three runs in the eighth inning off LHP Blaine Sims. The lone earned run surrendered by Sims was a solo blast by C Brian Ward.
Lynchburg scored two runs in the ninth to avoid a shutout but Frederick prevailed on Friday evening, 6-2. Nick Haughian improved to 3-3 on the year while Matt Crim fell to 1-5.
Game two of the three-game series between the Keys and Hillcats will take place on Saturday night in Frederick. RHP Bobby Bundy (6-3, 2.73) gets the start for Frederick while Lynchburg turns to RHP Aaron Shafer (0-0, 2.89). First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The first 1,000 fans in attendance on Saturday night will receive a rubber ducky courtesy of Precision Heating & Cooling. Make sure to stick around following the final pitch as fireworks will follow the game. For tickets, call 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkkeys.com.
