Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
- RHP Joe Wieland (1-2, 2.52) at RHP Trevor Holder (1-2, 6.75)
- AND THAT HAPPENED: Tuesday morning's rout of the Potomac Nationals set all kinds of offensive marks for the Pelicans. Myrtle Beach hammered out 20 runs on 23 hits--including 16 of the extra-base variety besting the team's previous 2011 high of six--while rolling to a 20-6 victory. All of those categories set new season highs and are the most for any team in the Carolina League this season. The Pelicans also set team and league marks with doubles (8), homers (5), RBIs (20), and tied the league mark while setting a new team best for 2011 in triples (3). The Birds' 20 runs were most for a Pelicans team since June 20, 2008 when Myrtle Beach drubbed Lynchburg to the tune of 22-3. On Tuesday, all Pelicans hitters had at least one hit, five had at least three, and seven of the nine men in the order had at least one run scored, at least one extra-base hit, or at least one RBI. Zach Zaneski's grand slam was the Pelicans' first this year.
BIG Z: Unheralded and undrafted out of the University of Rhode Island, Pelicans catcher Zach Zaneski made heads turn last year when he batted .310 with nine home runs and 52 runs batted in over 85 games at Class A Hickory, earning MLB.com Organizational All-Star honors. Tuesday at Potomac, he made eyes pop. The former URI Rams backstop went 5-for-6 with three doubles, two home runs, four runs scored, seven runs batted in, and 14 total bases. Zaneski became the first player in the Carolina League to record five hits in a game this season and took over the Pelicans' 2011 marks for most runs scored in a game, most total bases, and most RBIs and while tying single-game club season highs for doubles and homers. Zaneski's fourth-inning grand slam ended the day for Potomac starter Mitchell Clegg and was the second of the catcher's career, his first coming as a member of the Hickory Crawdads against the Delmarva Shorebirds last July 23. Zach set personal career bests in hits, runs scored, runs batted in, doubles, homers, and total bases.
CAROLINA CRUSHING: The Pelicans' 20-run outburst on Tuesday was historic not just for Myrtle Beach but for the Carolina League. The last time a team other than the Pelicans tallied 20 runs in a single game came all the way back in 2007. The Kinston Indians, paced by a two-homer, nine-RBI day from shortstop Josh Rodriguez, obliterated the Lynchburg Hillcats by a 22-10 final. The Pelicans' 23 hits were the most by a CL team since Winston-Salem compiled 26 in a game last season. The Salem Red Sox, Myrtle Beach's weekend opponent, owned the circuit's previous high in runs with a 16-run night on April 18 at Lynchburg.
