Potomac Nationals News Release

(WOODBRIDGE, VA) Joe Wieland nearly made Myrtle Beach history Wednesday night in Woodbridge, but 12 strikeouts - just one fewer than the Pelicans record - were more than enough as the Potomac Nationals dropped the rubber game of their first home series in more than two weeks, 3-0.

A day after a 20-6 slugfest, the ballclubs locked horns in a pitchers' duel. Trevor Holder shut the Pelicans down for four innings, but Wieland was more than up to the challenge. The Myrtle starter matched zeroes and struck out eight Nats through four.

Myrtle broke through in the fifth; Jared Prince's one out double was cashed in when Jared Bolden singled to right. Wieland held the Nats in check in the fifth and sixth innings with four more strikeouts to run his total to 13, and Myrtle doubled its lead in the sixth.

Leury Garcia led off the inning with a ground ball to the right side. Trevor Holder took the flip and appeared to beat Garcia to the bag, but Aaron Roberts disagreed. Holder was ejected after a brief discussion and gave way to Dean Weaver. Weaver allowed the second Myrtle Run with a bases loaded walk. It was not the last time Roberts would be in the spotlight.

In the bottom of the eighth, after the Pelicans had stretched their lead to three with an unearned run, Jeff Kobernus hit a ball down the third base line. Kobernus appeared to beat the long throw easily but was called out by Roberts. Kobernus was stunned, argued, and was ejected.

With the loss, the Nationals dropped the series and fell to 10-15. Myrtle moved to 17-9 heading into their series with Southern Division-leading Salem Red Sox.

Potomac heads out on the road again Thursday; Grainger Stadium will be the site of a four-game weekend set in Kinston. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
